Entrepreneurial Series: Trying to Create a Website?

Here's how ... read below.

Step 1: Finding and Purchasing a Domain Name

Your domain name is your website’s address on the internet (e.g., www.yourbusiness.com). Choosing a unique, memorable domain is crucial since it represents your brand.

Tips for Choosing a Domain Name:

  • Keep it short, simple, and relevant to your business.

  • Aim for a .com extension if possible (though .co, .net, and others can work too).

  • Avoid special characters, numbers, or hyphens.

  • Make it memorable and easy to spell.

Domain Registrars

Here are some popular companies to purchase your domain from:

  1. GoDaddy – Known for frequent sales and user-friendly service.

  2. Namecheap – Offers competitive pricing and free privacy protection.

  3. Google Domains – Direct integration with Google services, no hidden fees.

  4. Bluehost – Also offers hosting, which can simplify management if you go with them for both.

  5. DreamHost – Offers free domain privacy and security-focused features.

Cost: Domains generally cost between $10 and $15 per year, though some may be pricier depending on popularity.

Step 2: Choosing a Website Host and Builder

After purchasing a domain, you'll need a platform to host (store) and build your website. Some platforms offer all-in-one solutions where you can both build and host the site on their servers, making the process simpler. Others are just for hosting, so you’d use another tool to build the website itself.

All-in-One Website Builders with Hosting

These platforms include hosting and are ideal for beginners or those looking for a streamlined solution:

  1. Wix – Drag-and-drop builder with various templates. Great for easy customizations.

  2. Squarespace – Known for beautiful design templates, ideal for creative professionals.

  3. Weebly – Simple, intuitive, and budget-friendly.

  4. Shopify – Ideal for e-commerce; integrates easily with online payment systems.

  5. WordPress.com – A user-friendly version of WordPress, offering various templates.

Cost: These plans range from $5 to $30 per month, depending on features.

Hosting Services (If You Plan to Use WordPress.org or Another Website Builder)

If you prefer building on platforms like WordPress.org (more customizable) or others, you’ll need a separate hosting provider:

  1. Bluehost – Officially recommended for WordPress users, beginner-friendly.

  2. SiteGround – Known for excellent customer service and WordPress integration.

  3. HostGator – Affordable and offers basic and advanced plans.

  4. DreamHost – Reliable, especially for WordPress sites.

  5. InMotion Hosting – Good for small business websites, with robust support.

Cost: Generally between $3 and $20 per month, depending on plan features.

Step 3: Connecting Your Domain to Your Website Host

Once you have your domain and hosting set up, you’ll need to connect the two. Usually, this involves updating your domain’s DNS settings to point to your hosting provider’s servers. The provider you choose will guide you through this process, and it’s typically straightforward.

Step 4: Building Your Website

With your hosting set up, you can start building your site. Platforms like Wix, Squarespace, and Weebly have drag-and-drop editors that make it easy to customize your website without coding. WordPress gives you more control and access to thousands of themes and plugins if you want something highly customizable.
